Possession day feels like the finish line.
For your interiors, it is the starting line.

What you do in the first two weeks decides how smooth – or stressful – the next three months will be.

Before possession: start design early

Most families wait for the keys before speaking to an interior firm.
That costs time.

Design can begin with the builder's floor plan.
So by the time you get the keys, your layouts, 3D and materials are ready, and production can start soon after.

For a typical apartment with complete modular interiors, execution takes about 50–70 days from design sign-off.
Start design late, and that clock starts late too.

Week 1 after possession: inspect before you design

Do not let interiors hide the builder's problems.
Check these first, and get snags fixed in writing:

  • Dampness and cracks – bathrooms, balconies, external walls, below windows
  • Electrical – every point, the DB, earthing, AC and geyser points
  • Plumbing – leaks, water pressure, drain slopes, bathroom waterproofing
  • Doors and windows – alignment, locks, gaps
  • Flooring – hollow tiles, chipped edges, level

A small leak behind a new wardrobe becomes a big repair later.

Week 1–2: collect what your designer needs

  • Builder floor plan and electrical drawings
  • Photos and videos of every room and every wall
  • Society rules for interior work
  • Your list of must-haves – storage, study, puja, guest needs

Society rules Bangalore homeowners often miss

Many gated communities in Bangalore have strict rules:

  • Fixed work hours, often no work on Sundays
  • Limits on noisy cutting and drilling
  • Rules for using the service lift and moving material
  • A refundable interior deposit

Ask your association before work starts.
Factory-made modules help here – less cutting, less noise and less dust on site.

Plan these early – they are expensive to change later

Decision Why it matters
Electrical points for TV, kitchen appliances, ACs, geysers Moving them later means breaking walls
Kitchen layout and chimney ducting Decides hob, sink and storage positions
Washing machine and water purifier points Easy to forget, hard to add
False ceiling and lighting plan Must be done before painting
Wardrobe and loft sizes Must fit around windows, beams and AC points

FAQs

Should I fix builder snags before interiors?
Yes. Dampness, leaks and electrical faults are far costlier to fix under new interiors.

Can I live in the flat while interiors are done?
For small scopes, yes. For full interiors, an empty home is faster and safer.

When should I speak to an interior firm?
Before possession, so design is ready when you get the keys.
